History

The Aotearoa Liberation Army was founded by middle-class students at Auckland University, in 2005. The ALA opposed the rule of Helen Clark, considering her corrupt, authoritarian and oppressive. In it’s early years, the group primarily engaged in ideological work, combining both the principles of the Tiriti O Waitangi, and Marxist philosophy. Before ALA had carried out any military operations against the New Zealand government, a raid by the New Zealand secret police, the Special Tactics Group and the Counter Terrorist Taskforce, arrested the entire leadership and 90% of its cadres. All but one of its leaders were executed under martial law. Other members remained incarcerated for many years, with the last group being released just before Locke arrived in Wellington in 2017.

The ALA conducted anti-capitalist attacks prior to the Aotearoan Revolution. Since then it has conducted attacks against the interests of the socialist government system in Aotearoa and abroad.
